In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be introducing you to some members of the EB family.

Name:  Miriam Gonzalez-Garcia
Heritage:  Mixed (Puerto Rican & Mexican)
Favorite Hispanic Food: Tostones y Platanos Maduros (Amarillos)
Years at EB: Four

Who is Miriam Gonzalez-Garcia?
I have a Bachelor’s of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from SUNY Maritime College, and a Master’s of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Connecticut. I got a job at Electric Boat right out of college and have been with EB for four years. I currently work as an engineer in the Virginia Ship Control Trainers and Test group and serve as the Secretary for the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA).

Why do you like working at Electric Boat?
I love the work that I do and the people that I work with. I think what I do is interesting and engaging, and every person in my group is allowed to own something in a given project. The culture of ownership and accountability at EB resonates with me as well, because at the end of the day, we are all accountable to ourselves. I also like the flexibility that I have with my work hours and PTO, so I have a good work-life balance.

Why does the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA) matter to you?
When I first learned about the HSA about three years ago, I joined because it provides EB the unique opportunity to give back to the Latin-x community by giving scholarships to local Hispanic youth. I am a first-generation college graduate, so I personally understand the financial struggle Hispanic youth can face with higher education. I know every little bit counts for these kids, and the chance to help someone who was like me motivates my actions as a member of the association.
