Electric Boat capped December with our annual holiday turkey distribution in Connecticut and Rhode Island. A long-standing EB tradition, turkey distribution serves as a way for the workforce to kick off the holiday season together, and for management to personally thank employees for another year of hard work and contributions to our mission.
As we continue to hire new shipbuilders and our team continues to grow, so does the amount of turkeys we order as a token of appreciation for employees. EB ordered nearly 23,000 turkeys this year to hand out to employees, many of whom continued their own tradition of giving back by donating their turkey to those in need.
At the conclusion of turkey distribution in Connecticut, employees donated nearly 800 turkeys to charities in need. Notoriously generous, EB employees took it upon themselves to collect vouchers from coworkers, rounding up large quantities of frozen birds for various charities across the state. Employees either made their own arrangements to deliver the donations, or arranged for the charities to pick up at the dedicated bulk distribution.
In addition to employees’ individual donation efforts, each year, EB donates all unclaimed turkeys to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center in New London, Conn. On Friday, December 9, a record delivery of 4,690 frozen turkeys arrived at the food center, which will provide numerous meals for our neighbors in need.
In Rhode Island, several hundred unclaimed turkeys were donated to several local charities and food pantries, including Project Hand Up in West Warwick, Jonnycake Center of Westerly and the Rhode Island National Guard Family Assistance Center in Cranston.
