In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be introducing you to some members of the EB family.

Who is Joe Garcia?
I started my career at Electric Boat as an Engineer in 2003. I’ve worked in several areas of increased responsibility, specifically in Engineering and Operations. I am currently an Engineering Supervisor in D448, Ship Control and Monitoring Systems.  I hold a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Science in Systems Engineering from Johns Hopkins University.

In the community, I serve on my town’s planning board, volunteer as a Board Trustee on the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Trust Fund, and coach youth basketball. My wife, Ivania, and I have three young sons: Sebastian (6), Ruben (4), and Julian (3).  It’s awesome to witness them sprout into the kind, principled men that we’re striving for them to become.

Why do you like working at Electric Boat?
I like that I’ve had mentors and coaches that have encouraged and challenged me to become the best version of myself. They’ve demonstrated how to effectively model our core values and how to influence our culture in a positive way. I am grateful that throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of consistently working on high-performing teams.

Why does the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA) matter to you?
Affinity groups, like the HSA, are important because they promote a sense of belonging for diverse employees. These groups provide employees, especially new hires, an environment that embraces them and promotes social interactions, which helps increase engagement and allows employees to grow roots in our region. People drive our business, and having employees that think differently and who strongly align with our purpose, makes EB stronger.
