There is an urgent need to combat food insecurity in our communities. Electric Boat employees regularly donate across our facilities, and this year, in lieu of the holiday turkey program, Electric Boat made significant monetary contributions to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center on behalf of EB employees. However, during this unique time, we have an additional opportunity to accelerate our commitment to our neighbors in the communities in which we live and work.
The EB Employees Care Community Food Drive begins November 12 and will run through our December shutdown. Employees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to the multiple collection spots at their workplaces over the next two months.
The food we collect in Groton will go to the Gemma E. Moran United Way/Labor Food Center, which last year distributed the equivalent of 2.12 million meals in partnership with 65 member programs in Southeastern Connecticut, including food pantries, shelters, childcare centers, community meal sites, programs for the elderly and their Mobile Food Pantry. Each month 27,500 people are served through these programs.
Food collected at Quonset Point will go to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank, which serves as the central distribution hub for a statewide network of 137 food pantries, meal sites, senior programs and school pantries. Each month this food bank serves 89,000 Rhode Islanders including families, seniors and many individuals who have never before sought food assistance.
If you have any questions about the Food Drive, please reach out to Electric Boat’s Community Engagement team at CommunityEngagement@gdeb.com.
I encourage you to join with your fellow employees to make a difference in our community.
Thank you.
