Based in New London, the Hispanic Alliance of Southeastern Connecticut has been serving the community for 19 years. Founded in May of 2000, this organization helps bring surrounding communities together through events, training, education and advocacy for initiatives that promote equity for all. As the only Hispanic organization in the region, their mission is to advance Hispanic contributions throughout Southeastern CT.
To date, the organization has assisted 936 individuals with affordable health insurance applications, awarded 275 higher education scholarships to aspiring Hispanic students, and has helped train 523 minorities through leadership and advocacy workshops. Through partnerships with health and social service organizations, local schools, and with the help of donations from the community, the Hispanic Alliance of SECT continues to lift up others. During these unprecedented times, they need support now more than ever.
Electric Boat’s Hispanic Shipbuilders Association, in collaboration with the Electric Boat Community Services Association, Women in Defense, Electric Boat Management Association and the Black Engineering Council, sponsored a virtual food drive from June 29 through July 10 in support of the Hispanic Alliance of SECT. Â EB employees were invited to bring in non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, masks and other essential items to place in donation boxes located at the Groton and New London facilities, or make a monetary donation through the Hispanic Alliance website.
At the end of the drive, Electric Boat was able to donate 900 pounds of food, $1,060 in website donations/gift cards, and 100 masks.
The Hispanic Alliance of Southeastern Connecticut was extremely appreciative and humbled by the generosity of Electric Boat employees, and would like to send their heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated. The donations received from EB will help around 200 families in our community.
As America marks its 250th birthday, we celebrate the generations of shipbuilders whose skill and commitment have strengthened our nation, and especially thank our current generation of EB shipbuilders for all you’re doing to meet this challenging moment in history. Happy Fourth of July.
