In the two weeks since I’ve re-joined Electric Boat, I’ve had the opportunity to talk with many of you. I’ve enjoyed our yard, hallway, shop floor and elevator conversations. I’m impressed by your enthusiasm and commitment to our shared purpose of delivering the world’s finest submarines to the US Navy. Thank you for the warm welcome back you’ve offered me.
On October 4, the Quality team successfully completed the Phase II SUBSAFE and FLY BY WIRE audit of the Vermont (SSN 792). Our SUBSAFE-certified ships perform their mission better than any other nation’s submarine force and our continued commitment to excellence will help maintain that legacy.
On October 5, we celebrated the christening of the Oregon (SSN 793). Following the christening, more than 2,500 shipbuilders visited the shipyard to ‘Observe the Oregon.’ I shook many hands that day, and met a lot of future shipbuilders, who looked with wonder at the submarine that their Mom or Dad (or, in some cases, both) played a part in designing or building. I was sincerely inspired that so many of our colleagues spent a Saturday afternoon proudly sharing our work with their families.
We also worked hard to finalize a four-year contract between Electric Boat and the Metal Trades Council (MTC) of New London County. On October 8, more than 85% of MTC members who voted ratified this contract, providing wage increases and benefits enhancement for nearly 3,000 union members.
These are important achievements that are the consequence of our team members living our Core Values. Each one of these important milestones demonstrates how we value each other, behave with integrity and purpose and commit to excellence every time we report to work.
While the business of shipbuilding is never easy, with 11 Virginia-class boats currently being built and construction starting next year on the Columbia lead ship, I am excited for our future and encouraged by our recent achievements. Together, the shipbuilders of Electric Boat can meet the challenges ahead.
Thank you for all you do,
Kevin
