Employees should anticipate significant travel delays on Wednesday, May 20, due to the presidential visit to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London. Local police departments in Groton and New London have announced road closures, travel restrictions and extensive no‑parking zones beginning as early as 5:00 a.m. Temporary intersection and roadway closures are expected between approximately 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., with no vehicle movement allowed when closures are in effect. The Gold Star Bridge and surrounding roadways may be impacted at unpredictable times.
Because of these conditions, EB employees should expect disruptions to normal commuting patterns, including delays to and from facilities across the region. Shuttles between Groton and New London may be significantly affected, and timing cannot be guaranteed. Utilizing virtual meeting options, including Microsoft Teams, is recommended to reduce travel needs during the affected hours.
Both the New London and Groton Police Departments advise drivers to seek alternate routes and to factor in extended travel times. Employees working on-site should allow additional time for arrival, and those able to adjust schedules or work remotely (with supervisor approval) are encouraged to do so. Thank you for your patience and planning as the region accommodates this event.
