The Hartford Business Journal (HBJ) 40 Under Forty Awards recognize outstanding young professionals in the Greater Hartford region who are excelling in their industries through their leadership roles. Recipients of a 40 Under Forty award are driven by success, motivated by challenges and are role models for their peers, each sharing a commitment to success, personal growth and community involvement. General Dynamics Electric Boat is proud to congratulate Matthew ‘Matt’ Gravell, Director of Program Finance, on joining the 2024 class of HBJ’s 40 Under Forty honorees.
Matt is a dynamic leader whose wealth of knowledge and expertise has been exhibited throughout his career. From intern to director, he has held various positions within the finance organization during his tenure at EB. For his diligent leadership and incomparable work ethic over the years, Matt’s talents have been recognized and rewarded through participation in EB’s Future Leader Group (FLG) and Business Leader Group (BLG) programs, as well as the Senior Leader Development Program (SLDP).
Matt’s career spans various roles including financial analyst, cost engineer, chief of finance and manager of program finance for Virginia construction. His leadership and talents have been leveraged throughout his 15 years at EB, and he is known as a vibrant leader with a keen talent for mentorship, taking the time to mentor numerous employees both within and outside of his organization. Matt has received several internal recognitions, including being selected to participate in a two-week cost review in Australia for the Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC) overhaul programs in 2020. In 2023, he was selected to be a senior rider on USS Vermont sea trials for five days. Sea trials are a testing phase of a boat to measure performance and overall operations, and participants are typically from the operations organization and other carefully selected personnel from other organizations.

Outside of leading the Program Finance team, Matt is a member of the Electric Boat Management Association (EBMA) and is dedicated to his community. A UConn Alumni and avid Huskie, he has participated in a speaking engagement series at UConn’s Avery Point campus designed for underprivileged freshmen who had little-to-no resources and support while continuing their education. Matt shared his experiences and struggles as a college student while motivating the students to continue their educational pursuits. He is an active coach for his local youth sports teams and a member of the Parent Teachers Organization in Colchester, CT.
The 2024 40 Under Forty award ceremony took place on Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, CT, where Matt was recognized and accepted his award in person. Click here to read Matt’s feature in the HBJ.
