The Hartford Business Journal (HBJ) 40 Under Forty Awards recognize outstanding young professionals in the Greater Hartford area who are excelling in their industries through their leadership roles. They are driven by success, motivated by challenges and are role models for their peers. These individuals are part of an outstanding class of upcoming business leaders and share a commitment to business success, personal growth and community involvement. General Dynamics Electric Boat is proud to congratulate Kamal Mohamed, ship manager, as one of the 2026 HBJ 40 Under Forty honorees.

Kamal is a standout leader whose knowledge and expertise have been leveraged throughout his career. From systems engineer to ship manager, he has applied his skills to build an extensive 15-year career in engineering and leadership, including the last 11 years focused on submarine construction management. As a perpetual learner with a track record of diligent leadership, Kamal has been recognized and rewarded through his participation in programs such as the Future Leader Group (FLG), Business Leader Group (BLG), the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) 04 One Nuclear Shipyard Senior Leader Workshop (SLW), and most recently the General Dynamics Internal Control 2026 Cohort.

Kamal has built a career defined by unwavering determination and exceptional leadership. As ship manager for USS Iowa (SSN 797), he guided a team of seven managers and 600 employees through one of the most complex construction efforts in the maritime industry, overcoming pandemic challenges, adapting to unprecedented setbacks, and driving innovation when traditional methods fell short. His resilience led to Iowa achieving a record-setting milestone of 90% completion at float-off, the highest of any Virginia-class submarine.

Today, Kamal brings that same commitment to excellence to the Columbia program, where he is one of seven ship managers leading construction of the first submarine of its class. Responsible for the forward end and guiding over 300 employees, he plays a vital role in advancing Electric Boat’s contributions to our nation’s national defense. His ability to identify and elevate talent has strengthened the ship management organization, expanding it from three to six leaders prepared to meet the program’s accelerated pace. Throughout his career, Kamal’s steadfast leadership, strategic vision, and dedication to his team have not only navigated extraordinary challenges, but they have also set new standards for what is possible.

Within the community, Kamal is a member of GDEB’s Black Engagement Council (BEC) where he serves as a mentor to young engineers. He is also a member of the Electric Boat Management Association (EBMA) and the Electric Boat Athletic Club (EBAC). Outside of Electric Boat, Kamal maintains a relationship with his Alma Mater, the University of New Hampshire (UNH), by being active within his UNH alumni organization where he mentors numerous engineering students and fellow football players. He takes time to visit UNH to speak with football players to share words of encouragement while building momentum for upcoming games.

The 2026 40 Under 40 award ceremony took place on Thursday, September 17, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville, Connecticut, where Kamal was recognized and accepted his award in person. Click here to read Kamal’s feature in the 2026 40 Under Forty Honorees edition of the Hartford Business Journal.
