Meet the Barnacle, Electric Boat’s newest parking-enforcement tool that will begin deployment in the Groton shipyard starting Monday, June 15. As our enterprise continues to grow, we are dedicated to ensuring parking is safe, fair and accessible to all. The Barnacle is an immobilizing parking-enforcement device that attaches directly to a vehicle’s windshield using heavy-duty, commercial-grade suction cups. It completely obstructs the driver’s view, making it illegal and dangerous to drive, and triggers a GPS-tracked alarm if tampered with.
How it Works
EB Security will place a Barnacle on the windshield of vehicles found in breach of company policies MDP-01533 and EBP-01434. Violations include parking in reserved and handicap spaces without a pass, parking on endcaps, in pedestrian walkways and blocking driving lanes. Employees who receive a Barnacle on their windshield will:
Call the phone number displayed on the Barnacle
EB Security will be dispatched to the employee’s vehicle, collect the employee’s badge information and remove the device*
All violations will be reported to HR for progressive discipline
* EB Security will respond as quickly as possible but expect a wait time of up to two hours
The device is equipped with GPS tracking and built-in tamper sensors. If someone tries to drive away, pry the device off or move the vehicle, an alarm sounds and alerts EB Security.
With the parking capacity introduced with the addition of P-Lot (now at 700 spaces) and the availability of substantial parking capacity at the Crystal Mall in Waterford (see below map for new parking area and bus pick-up location), we have sufficient open parking to accommodate our current Groton workforce as well as projected near-term growth. Below is an updated transportation schedule effective 6/10/26. We continue to strive to provide the most convenient parking/transportation options possible. However, our employees need to understand and expect that not all parking options will be within walking distance of the facility.
Employees are reminded of the following guidelines that are provided in EBP-01434:
Employees must park in the areas for which they have a valid issued parking permit
Vehicles must only be parked in areas designated by painted lines for parking and must fit within all lines of the designated space
Vehicles must not obstruct the free flow of traffic
Vehicles that are parked in reserved areas must display a valid parking permit for that area
Managers and supervisors are asked to brief their teams on this parking-enforcement device and remind them of EB’s parking policies.
