CT DOT is preparing to enter the next major phase of the Gold Star Memorial Bridge Rehabilitation Project, and employees should expect new traffic patterns that may affect travel to and from EB’s Groton and New London facilities.

A crossover will direct two northbound lanes onto the southbound bridge, as shown in this CT DOT illustration.

What’s Changing

  • A new I‑95 northbound crossover will be installed the night of Saturday, May 30, shifting a portion of northbound traffic onto the southbound bridge.
  • Beginning May 31, this configuration will remain in place for roughly four years, with only two lanes open on the northbound bridge.
  • Speed limits approaching and on the bridge will be reduced to 45 mph for the duration of the project (through 2030).
  • CT DOT will continue intermittent weekday lane closures (7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.) and nightly southbound work (8:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m.).

Current Traffic Conditions

CT DOT data shows consistent southbound delays from 2–5 p.m. Traffic outside this window, and on the northbound side, has been less affected. A new dedicated Route 12/184 on‑ramp lane has provided some relief to the southbound flow.

EB Coordination Efforts

EB Security and Communications are working closely with CT DOT, the Gold Star Bridge Project Team, and the Town of Groton to identify potential mitigations, including adjusting Route 349 traffic‑light timing and monitoring updated traffic data as conditions evolve.

What Employees Can Do

  • Use Route 349 when leaving the Groton shipyard—especially if heading southbound in the afternoon.
Take advantage of EB Shuttle services and the ample parking available at the former Crystal Mall, though employees should factor in possible delays. Using the shuttle over the bridge will help alleviate overall traffic out of the shipyard and let passengers use the travel time productively.
  • Confirm your mobile number in EB Self Service (via Homeport) to receive real‑time Everbridge traffic alerts (no separate account required).

EB will share additional information as it becomes available. Employees may also visit the CT DOT project website for updates, FAQs, schedules, and press releases.
