The Fourth of July is a time to celebrate our nation’s birthday with picnics, parties, family and friends. I hope you will enjoy these traditions, and also take a moment to think about what it means to be American.

At the end of his life, President George Washington reflected on July 4, 1776, saying, “The establishment of our new government seemed to be the last great experiment for promoting human happiness.”

Many thought the great experiment would fail, but it has held strong for 243 years due to our nation’s commitment to the higher principles of freedom, equality, opportunity and self-governance.

You defend these principles each day through the contributions you make to bringing nuclear submarines to the U.S. Navy. Please remember that as we move through the excitement and challenges that come with delivering a once-in-a-generation number of submarines with unprecedented capabilities. The Navy is relying on us to help them protect and advance this great experiment.

And we will do this, because, in the words of another American President, John F. Kennedy, “The American, by nature, is optimistic. He is experimental, an inventor and a builder who builds best when called upon to build greatly.”

Thanks for all you do.

Be safe and have a happy Independence Day!

Jeff
