On May 4, the Electric Boat Employees’ Community Services Association (EBECSA) held their annual Day of Caring event at Coogan Farm in Mystic. Over 25 volunteers, including EB employees, friends and family members pitched in and gave back to the community through a day of hard work.

Volunteers removed rocks, weeds and trash, making room for a mini-meadow that will work to attract pollinators.

They also prepared an herb garden, installed tomato posts and built a cat tunnel so fresh produce can be grown year round. Throughout the day, beds of squash, zucchini, sun flowers, radishes, spinach, kale and a variety of other products were planted.

Coogan Farm, home to the Giving Garden, will donate the produce to the Gemma E. Moran/United Way Labor Food Bank, which distributes food to 63 programs that serve 91 feeding sites across New London County.

“On behalf of United Way of Southeastern CT and Coogan Farm, we are truly thankful and appreciate EB employees and families for volunteering on their own time,” said Sharon Peccini, Community Engagement Working Leader and Labor Engagement Senior Vice President of the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut. “Because of your efforts in preparing our farm, we will be able to feed thousands of families in our community healthy fresh vegetables this coming season. You are a remarkable group of people.”
