Last week, the Leadership Program of the Eastern Connecticut Chamber of Commerce marked the ribbon cutting on an updated and improved outdoor patio at the New London location of The Lighthouse, a social services agency that helps people with disabilities.
Jan Schneider, a Design Build Supervisor in Department 201, is the EB representative in the 2019-2020 Leadership Program class. For the past year, Jan and her classmates met for one day a month to learn more about the economy in eastern Connecticut and the business and socioeconomic challenges facing it with the goal of cultivating a new generation of regional leaders.
The Chamber Leadership group selected The Lighthouse as their class community capstone project and worked together on a project to improve the organization’s patio area. The group’s upgrades include a leveled and upgraded patio, new patio furniture and new awning and “walk of fame” featuring bricks purchased by supporters of the Lighthouse honoring beneficiaries of the center’s services.
The Lighthouse is a nonprofit serving individuals with disabilities throughout Eastern Connecticut. Divided into three “campuses”, The Light House has a broad range of programming including two state-approved private schools, residential and transitional services, and state contracted adult services.
Jan and her classmates will now lead the programming from the incoming group of program participants. “I had a terrific experience in the program and am glad that I was encouraged to apply. I made great connections, learned about our community and am looking forward to working with the incoming class.”
