EB’s Black Engineering Council (BEC) wrapped up this year’s Black History Month (BHM) celebration on Tuesday, February 26, in the best way they knew how: serving the community. For the final BHM event, BEC members volunteered at the Gemma E. Moran/United Way Food Bank, sorting and packing non-perishables. Special thanks to the 15 volunteers that sorted over 60 pounds of food at the event!
The BEC hosted this, and three additional events, for the 2019 BEC BHM celebration to increase awareness of and celebrate African American/Black culture and history. This year’s celebration consisted of the following events:
•BHM Kick-Off Social: A networking social for BEC members, EB employees and New London community members at one of New London’s popular black-owned restaurants, Hot Rod Café.
•BHM View & Chew: A film screening of the Oscar-nominated “If Beale Street Could Talk” at the historic Garde Arts Center, followed by a facilitated discussion at 2 Wives Brick Oven Pizza over their late-night menu.
•BHM Jeopardy Competition: A family-oriented jeopardy competition about black history facts co-hosted with the Drop-In Learning Center of New London.
•BHM Community Service Event: A community service event with the Gemma E. Moran/United Way Food Bank that supplied sorted, non-perishables for the United Way Mobile Food Pantry trucks to distribute to Southeastern CT families in need.
Each event was a great opportunity for members of the BEC, Electric Boat and New London communities to discover and celebrate African-American/black history while coming together and positively impacting the community.

Atlas Plaque Unveiled, Honoring Plank Owners at South Yard Ceremony
