After the christening of the submarine Vermont (SSN 792) on Oct. 20, Allison Stiller, Principal Civilian Deputy, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Research, Development and Acquisition (ASN RDA), presented a thank-you note and congratulatory medal to four Groton shipbuilders from James Geurts, Assistant Secretary of the Navy (RDA). She explained that Secretary Geurts has reinstated a World War II-era Navy program thanking businesses for their contributions to the nation’s defense. The four recipients were:
- Bill Post (D248) is a 45-year veteran of pipe welding. He is the department’s top X-ray welder who performs all of the high-risk and complex pipe-welding jobs. In addition, Bill is an instructor in Groton’s Active Learning Center (ALC) and a mentor for the next generation of pipe welders.
- Matt Intrieri (D226) is a steel trades general foreman on Vermont. Matt started as a shipfitter 3.5 years ago, was promoted to operations supervisor and successfully stowed South Dakota (SSN 790) with thousands of critical spare parts. Matt was recently promoted to general foreman; he is part of the next generation who will be leading the team for many years to come.
- Keith Glidden (D243) recently achieved the status of Distinguished Shipbuilder, celebrating 40 years at Electric Boat. Keith is one of the department’s on-the-job training instructors, as well as an instructor in the Pipe Shop’s ALC. He is very proud to mentor and coach EB’s next generation of shipbuilders.
- Tanner Glantz (D271) has been at Electric Boat for 11 years. Tanner started his career as an electrical engineer before accepting a position in ships management as an area superintendent, and most recently became the ship manager on Vermont. Tanner is a graduate of EB’s Business Leader Group (BLG).
803 Section 2B/5 Transported from Quonset Point to Groton
PCU Arizona’s (SSGN 803) Section 2B/5 was successfully delivered to Groton from Quonset Point. At 184 feet in length, this section – which includes the Virginia Payload Module (VPM) – is the largest Virginia-class shipment ever transported.
