A topping off ceremony was held at Quonset Point yesterday, February 25, for the new 9B building, which is one of many projects being developed as part of the EB Facilities Master Plan (FMP). Building 9B will be used for final module assembly and outfitting, and is scheduled to be completed this summer.
In building construction, a topping off ceremony is traditionally held when the last beam is placed atop a structure, often accompanied by a tree. Before being raised at yesterday’s ceremony, the final steel beam for building 9B was signed by those in attendance, including EB management, employees and contractors.
Building 9B is being built by Dimeo Construction Company of Providence, Rhode Island. At this point in the project, 820 tradespeople from Dimeo have worked over 380,000 hours on the building. So far, 2,200 tons of reinforced steel, 15,000 tons of structural steel, 39,000 cubic yards of concrete, 15,000 cubic yards of dirt, 8 miles of pipe and 14 miles of wire cable have been used to complete the outer structure of the building.
