On Monday, U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh visited New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) for an overview of the regional submarine workforce development program. The goal of this federally-funded program is to develop the skilled workforce needed to meet the current and future DOD submarine shipbuilding needs.

HR VP Andrew Bond provided an EB hiring projection and discussed the workforce training and development needs to the group, which included Gov. McKee, Senator Reed, Senator Whitehouse, Congressman Cicilline and Congressman Langevin.

As part of the visit, Sec. Walsh toured NEIT’s manufacturing classrooms and had an opportunity to meet and speak with three EB employees that were trained through these programs. He was impressed with what he saw and pledged his support to increase funding to this program to train more shipbuilders. In addition, Secretary Walsh would like to replicate this program as a national model for workforce development in all sectors.
