You are currently viewing October 13, 2020 – Meet an HSA Member: Tomas Salazar

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be introducing you to some members of the EB family.

Name: Tomas Salazar
Heritage: Ecuador
Favorite Hispanic Food: Ceviche
Years at EB: 5 Years

Who is Tomas Salazar?
I have a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from Syracuse University and I’m currently pursuing my Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering at the University of Connecticut. I joined Electric Boat in 2015 right after college, and I’m currently working as a ship control engineer on Virginia-class submarines. I also serve as the Treasurer for the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA). In my spare time, I enjoy taking ballroom and Latin dance classes, which is a great way for me to reconnect with my roots as well as learn styles from other cultures.

Why do you like working at Electric Boat?
I like the diversity of work that Electric Boat offers to their employees.  One day, you might be designing a component that would be part of a future submarine build. The next day, you might be troubleshooting a failure on a submarine under construction. The training and mentoring that EB offers allows you to work on different projects and get a feel for what you want to do as you progress further into your career.

Why does the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA) matter to you?
The mission of the HSA is what drove me to join in the first place.  Being able to serve the local Hispanic community and provide opportunities to local Hispanic youth with scholarship awards is something that I resonate with, having come from a family who experienced financial hardship. If it weren’t for grants and scholarships that were available to high school students at the time, I would have not been able to go to college and graduate as an engineer. I want to help out as much as I can to give back to the community and be able to help high school students with their dream of going to college without the financial burden that would stop them from going.
