In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be introducing you to some members of the EB family.

Who is Homar Vasquez?
After completing a course in Mechanical Design at Porter & Chester, I worked as a contractor for machine shops and civil engineering groups. Three or four years later, I accepted a position with Electric Boat. While at EB, I learned about a Hispanic/Latino group – Hispanic Shipbuilders Association – and I became a member as soon as possible. Now I’m the New London Activity Director for the HSA.

Why do you like working at Electric Boat?
I like working for Electric Boat because of the interesting tasks and training that’s involved in my day-to-day. Although I came to EB with field experience, EB offered training that made it easy for me to understand my job duties. Electric Boat also offers great benefits and competitive wages, which made my decision to come on board easy. I also like that EB’s product is well known and is one of the machines that protects our country by sea. This would make anyone feel proud of their position and who they work for.

Why does the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association (HSA) matter to you?
Joe Lopez, who founded the HSA, had a vision. Part of that vision was for the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association to be a beacon to new hires of Hispanic descent, welcoming them to Electric Boat and letting them know we’re here for them if they seek information about EB and what we have to offer.

HSA matters to me because I know we are helping our local community. Each year, the Hispanic Shipbuilders Association offers three scholarships. One scholarship goes to a local high school or college student of Hispanic descent. The other scholarships are allocated to a student or spouse of an associated HSA member, and to a high school or college student of non-Hispanic decent of a paid member. We are able to offer these scholarships because of HSA’s fundraisers, such as the Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration Luncheon.

When I learned about Joe’s vision for the HSA, I knew I wanted to be a part of this organization and help others of non-Hispanic or Hispanic descent.
